Weathering refers to the physical, chemical, and biological processes that break down rock and other materials at or near the Earth's surface. It occurs over a long period of time due to the exposure to weather elements such as wind, rain, snow, ice, and plants, among others. There are two main types of weathering: mechanical weathering which involves physical processes such as freezing and thawing, and chemical weathering which involves chemical reactions that alter the structure of the rock or mineral. Weathering can result in the formation of soil, erosion, and the creation of natural landscapes such as canyons, rock formations, and arches.
